Glaucoma

Glaucoma is pressure induced optic atrophy. In which the pressure in the eye is raised which in turn damages the optic nerve causing permanent loss of vision.

It is also called the silent thief of vision. Our eyes produce a clear liquid known as aqueous Humour this maintains the pressure inside the eye. Optimum pressure is required to maintain the structure of the eye.

Types of Glaucoma

  1. Open angle-glaucoma
  2. Angle closure glaucoma, also called closed -angle glaucoma
  3. Congenital glaucoma
  4. Secondary glaucoma

If diagnosed early it can be managed by performing a clinical laser which is called YAG LASER through which IRIDOTOMY is done. Also topical medications are used to control the intraocular pressure. If laser and topical beta-blockers aren’t sufficient patient has to undergo surgery called Trabeculectomy.
